Silver Cross Memorial Cenotaph

Silver Cross Park

Located on the north side of Tollgate Road, east of Pitt Street stands Silver Cross. It is one of the parks which run along the Boals Drain. Within walking distance are a strip mall and chain coffee house.

The Memorial Silver Cross is a Canadian medal, established in 1919. And “…awarded to the mother, widow(er) or next of kin of any member of the Canadian Forces who lost their lives in active service including peace-keeping and other international operations.” The cross was originally worn around the neck from an 11 mm wide light purple ribbon attached by a silver ring.

Since January 1945 awards have been presented with a straight silver brooch bar in place of the purple ribbon. They are worn on the left breast above any other medals the recipient has. The emblem will vary according to the reigning monarch.

Silver Cross Mother is chosen each year by the Royal Canadian Legion. She will lay a wreath during the Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on behalf of all mothers who have lost children in the service of their country. The tradition was long-standing in Cornwall, as well.
